Using your existing Power investment for AI loads LIMITED
Tuesday June 3, 2025 10:40 - 11:40 CEST
Problem: We had an ever-increasing need for processing power running advanced analytics and AI workloads. Initially everything ran in a WMware/Intel environment which demanded more and more virtual hosts.

At the same time, we had a set-up where the ERP system ran on one master Power server and another hot stand-by Power server. The hot stand-by host was in principle never used other than when failover tests were performed.

Solution: We slightly redesigned the existing analytics platform and ported it to Linux on Power utilizing the hot standby server. The solution was from the beginning designed so that in case the hot stand-by was ever needed the workload could be dynamically distributed to other computing environments on-prem or in the cloud.

Configuration: The solution is based on open technologies to allow for flexible deployments on-prem or in any cloud. The primary building blocks are Apache Spark, Kubernetes, MongoDB and Elasticsearch. In addition to that other technologies are used to solve particular analytics or AI problems. The system is governed by a redundant master controller where the deployment of compute nodes is managed. The actual workloads and data pipelines are handled by a redundant job controller. Compute jobs are mainly run in Spark using SQL, R and Python and all data is stored in MongoDB or in Parquet or Delta table formats.

Conclusion: Utilizing spare capacity is extremely cost effective and performing heavy data processing on-prem can save a considerable amount of money.

Should I stay or should I go LIMITED
Tuesday June 3, 2025 10:40 - 11:40 CEST
AI offers the opportunity to modernize legacy code, enhancing its performance and maintainability. However, it also presents the possibility of migrating away from the current platform. This raises an important question: should you invest in revitalizing your existing environment, or explore new horizons by transitioning to a different platform? The decision hinges on your long-term goals, the needs of your business, and the value each option brings. So, should you stay and optimize or take the leap and go? Or in The Clash words: "This indecision's bugging me If you don't want me, set me free"

Mission: Possible! Journaling Forensics 101 (with Free Tools)!
Tuesday June 3, 2025 10:40 - 11:40 CEST
Learn to think like a spy! Many shops use journaling for a variety of reasons, but may not be familiar with how to use these journals for forensic purposes. Mining your journals for the who, what, when, where, how - and sometimes even why - can be very useful, not to mention fun! Come join us for a lighthearted and entertaining "Mission: Impossible" themed look at one of the most useful things you can do with your journals. This session will introduce journaling concepts and share tuning tips to optimize your journal environment for forensics. After reviewing the "old fashioned" way to dig into your journals, we will demonstrate how much easier this is with the right tools. The DMPJRN and CVTJRNDTA commands used in this presentation will be made available as a free download to all attendees, including source code!

Learning Objectives - After participating in this session, attendees should have the skills and tools to:
- Optimize your journal environment to maximize the forensic information available to you
- Understand what your journals are trying to tell you, and how to interrogate them to get the answers you need
- Dump your journals quickly and easily using the free software made available
- Be able to interpret the content of your journals to determine what really happened to your data
- Use the techniques demonstrated in the provided source code to develop your own tools
- Save the world from evil-doers

Audience:
- Anyone who would like to better understand how to maximize their journaling environment to make use of forensic data would benefit from this session. If you've ever needed to figure out how something happened to your data, if you like playing detective, if you enjoy building tools to make your job easier, then please join us!

Turn up the Power: External Disk and Hardware Replication on i... A Case Study!
Tuesday June 3, 2025 11:50 - 12:50 CEST
Your IBM i does a great job of managing internal disk, so why upgrade to external storage using a SAN? Your replication software may require some extra time and attention, but it gets the job done - so why change? Turns out there are lots of reasons to change both! This won't be a nuts and bolts how-to session. Rather it will be a case study of the decisions made by one large appliance and electronics retailer to implement these technologies, including the considerations, decisions, trade-offs, and benefits. You may not leave this session knowing how to do it, but you'll understand why you might want to, and you'll be ready to ask many of the right questions to get you there.

Some of the topics we'll discuss will include:
- HA vs DR
- RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective)
- iASP's
- Tool-kits
- Backups
- Flash Copy
- Recovery Scenarios

You'll leave this session better prepared to:
- Determine if external storage is right for your environment
- Understand the trade-offs involved with external storage and hardware replication
- Know what questions to ask along the way!

Audience:
- Anyone who is curious about using external storage and hardware replication with their IBM i is encouraged to attend!

How to store and protect your container data
Tuesday June 3, 2025 14:00 - 15:00 CEST
Storage has always been a challenge for IT users, with challenges such as integrity, replication and migration of large data sets.
These challenges are not new, and with modern decentralized systems based on containers, they have not disappeared.
Kubernetes is the most popular orchestrator for containerized workloads. Because containers delete all saved data as standard, this can create major challenges for many types of workload.
Come and learn more about the challenges, and learn about functions and technology that helps solve this problem in one container-based environment.

Sponsor session: Use AI to Build an IBM i Web App in Under 10 Minutes — No Coding Required!
Tuesday June 3, 2025 15:15 - 15:40 CEST
Valence 6.3, the popular web and mobile framework for IBM i, includes a browser-based low-code development utility called Nitro App Builder (NAB), through which anyone with a solid understanding of their IBM i database can build and deploy dazzling web or mobile apps in a matter of minutes.

With newly integrated IBM i-centric AI functionality, developers can use NAB to very quickly create a broad range of applications — from simple dashboard and inquiry apps, complete with download-to-Excel functionality, to highly intricate and intuitive data entry apps.

All of this can be achieved with no coding, though IBM i developers can easily extend functionality with RPG or SQL code to handle business logic as needed. Advanced programmers comfortable with HTML5 and JavaScript code can take things even further, creating super elaborate apps that work hand-in-hand with server-side RPG logic through the Valence Portal. And as of this latest release, you can use the integrated AI assistant to write much of the code for you!

The bottom line:  With Valence, whether you're a seasoned RPG developer or a super user with intimate knowledge of your system's physical files, you can crank out highly functional web and mobile apps on IBM i in no time — no prior experience in web or mobile development required. Come to this quick demo session to see the latest release of the Valence framework, and how easy it is to quickly build and deploy web apps on your IBM i system.

If time permits, some actual deployed IBM i customer applications from various industries will be demonstrated as well.

Using modern mobile Apps created with Flutter and RPG Microservices as Backend
Tuesday June 3, 2025 17:00 - 18:00 CEST
There is more than one way to skin a cat - so it is with creating a modern, graphical User Interface for IBM I Applications (and of course for all the other platforms as well).
My Team and I are using multiple ways like Angular, ExtJs, React, .Net (XAML with MAUI), Serverbased Web Applications, IceCap, Swift, Kotlin AND Flutter.
It always depends what you want to achieve and - of course - what kind of resources (human as well as time and money) you have.

One way, which is a very good one from our perspective, is the DART Framework Flutter.

In this Session you will see how you can create platform independent Apps with one codebase using the Flutter Framework and RPG Microservices with JSON as the backend on IBM i with DB2 for i.

Learn about the advantages of the Flutter Framework and how you can use one codebase to run on mobile, Desktop and Browser in combination with RPG Microservices in the backend running on IBM i with DB2 for i.
Quick Look on what a RPG Microservice is, how you can easily create them and why it is a great idea to use it as a backend for any modern Frontend.
